OpenTable
Who is this for? This integration is for restaurants that take reservations through OpenTable. If you don’t use OpenTable, you can skip this page.
Use a different reservation system? Anything with an API can still be connected: see Connecting a Tool We Do Not List, which covers custom functions, the API and webhooks.
Availability. The OpenTable connection works through OpenTable’s partner program: your restaurant connects the DM Champ listing inside OpenTable (Integrations Marketplace in OpenTable for Restaurants), and only then can DM Champ see that restaurant’s availability. If the listing is not visible in your OpenTable account yet, the integration is not available to you yet — reach out via email support and we will let you know when it is.
OpenTable is the reservation network used by restaurants worldwide for online bookings, table management and guest profiles. Connecting OpenTable to DM Champ lets your AI Agent check live availability, book a table, and change or cancel a reservation for a guest, right inside the WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram or website chat the guest is already in.
What the AI Can Do With OpenTable
Once connected and picked as the booking provider on an AI Agent, the Agent can:
- Check availability for a date, time and party size (1 to 20 guests) against the restaurant’s live OpenTable inventory, including table types (standard, high top, bar, counter, outdoor) and dining areas.
- Book a table in the guest’s name. OpenTable identifies the guest by their mobile number and texts them the confirmation; on WhatsApp and SMS the Agent uses the number the conversation is on, on other channels it asks for a mobile number.
- Find the guest’s reservations so it can quote the confirmation number or act on the booking.
- Change the date, time, party size or special request of a reservation.
- Cancel a reservation.
Every reservation the Agent makes also appears on your Appointments page with an OPENTABLE badge, so you see it next to your other bookings. OpenTable stays the system of record: confirmations and reminders to the guest come from OpenTable itself.
What the AI cannot do
- Parties larger than 20 guests (OpenTable’s limit); the Agent refers those to the restaurant.
- Reservations covered by a deposit or credit-card hold that fall outside the cancellation window, and some changes between policies. OpenTable requires the restaurant to handle those, and the Agent hands the guest to you with your contact details instead of retrying.
- Ticketed OpenTable “Experiences” (tasting menus, events). The Agent books standard tables only.
- Bookings made under a different phone number than the conversation’s. For the guest’s privacy the Agent only sees reservations matched to the number it is talking to, or that were booked in the same chat.
Connecting OpenTable
Before you start: your restaurant has to connect the DM Champ integration inside OpenTable first. In OpenTable for Restaurants, open the Integrations Marketplace, find DM Champ and connect it. Until that is done, OpenTable refuses to give DM Champ access to the restaurant and the Restaurant ID step below stops with an “OpenTable hasn’t given this platform access to that restaurant yet” message.
- In the left sidebar, click Settings (gear icon).
- In the Settings sidebar, under the Integrations group, click Booking & Calendar.
- Find the OpenTable card and click Connect.
- Enter your Restaurant ID and click Continue. This is the number OpenTable calls the RID (for example 1038007); you’ll find it in OpenTable for Restaurants under your restaurant’s settings, or ask OpenTable support for it. We check that OpenTable lets us reach the restaurant before going on.
- Give the restaurant a name (this is what you’ll see in the list and what the AI calls it), optionally add your booking website, and click Add restaurant.
You can add several restaurants this way, one per OpenTable Restaurant ID: click Add restaurant on the connected OpenTable row for each one. The AI books at the active one; pause the others.
Pausing or Removing a Restaurant
Each connected restaurant has its own Pause and Remove buttons on the Booking & Calendar page. Pausing stops the AI taking reservations for that restaurant while leaving it set up; removing deletes it entirely, though you can add it back any time with the same ID.
Telling your AI Agent to book with OpenTable
- Click AI Agents in the sidebar and open the Agent.
- Go to the AI Abilities step and find the Bookings card.
- Turn on Let this agent book appointments.
- Click the provider picker and choose OpenTable.
No event type is needed: OpenTable brings its own availability, opening hours and table plan.
How a booking conversation goes
- The guest asks for a table. The Agent asks for the date, the number of guests and, if they have one, a preferred time.
- The Agent checks OpenTable and summarises the open times (“Friday for two: 18:00 to 20:30, every 15 minutes”). If a time needs a credit-card hold or deposit, it says so first; OpenTable texts the guest a secure link to complete it.
- The guest picks a time and confirms their name. The Agent books the table and gives the guest the confirmation number. OpenTable sends the guest an SMS confirmation.
- Later, the guest can ask the same Agent to move or cancel the reservation. The Agent looks it up, confirms what the guest wants, and makes the change in OpenTable, or hands the guest to you when OpenTable requires the restaurant to do it.
Times are always the restaurant’s local time.
Menu Questions
The OpenTable connection covers reservations; it does not read your menu. To let the AI answer menu questions:
- Add the menu to the knowledge base: put your dishes, prices, allergen notes and daily specials in your AI Agent’s FAQs or knowledge sources, and the bot answers “What vegetarian options do you have?” from there — see Managing FAQs.
- Send the menu as a file: upload the menu PDF or image to the media library with a “when to send” note, and the bot sends it when a guest asks for the menu or price list.
Tips for Restaurants
- Fill in your phone number and website in your account and on the restaurant so that when the AI has to hand a guest to you (a deposit change, a party of 25), it gives them a real way to reach you.
- Add operational FAQs to your AI Agent’s knowledge base: hours, parking, private dining, allergen policies, dress code — see Managing FAQs.
- Use tags to segment your guest list — for example “wine-lover”, “birthday-celebration”, “large-party” — and send targeted broadcasts to each segment.
